Types of ADHD

Not all ADHD is created equal
Not all ADHD is the same. For the record, we hate the name ADHD. Why? Because there’s no way that these 4 letters could ever scratch the surface the many different personalities, types and struggles of ADHD.
If we were going to rename ADHD….well, we wouldn’t. Instead, we might be tempted to give it 3 entirely different names! Treatment for ADHD varies so much and can encompass many different interventions. The common types of ADHD are:
HYPERACTIVE TYPE – You’re full of energy and might have difficulty sitting your classes, meetings, or conversations. You’re restless and fidgety. You struggle to wait your turn to talk. You’re passionate about your interests and have enormous focus for the things you love.
INATTENTIVE TYPE – You have difficulty with life’s details. You have a dreamer’s brain and have difficulty concentrating on tasks that are boring or feel like “too much”. You might lose stuff, forget meetings, and live with piles of important things all over your house.
You’re constantly buzzing with ideas, and might struggle in social situations because you don’t always stop to think about what you’re going to say. You joke about not having a filter, but the truth is, it often gets you into trouble.
COMBINED TYPE – Your have features of both hyperactive and inattentive type. You’re constantly in motion and have an ocean of ideas.
CONCENTRATION TYPE – Though not actually listed as a subtype of ADHD, it seems that concentration deficits could be on the ballot as the next runner up. It’s most related to Inattentive Type in that it often presents as sluggish or foggy. The difference here is that when you try to concentrate, your brain actually performs worse than when it’s not under task.
ADHD Symptoms Through The Lifespan

Children– You might have a picture of a child talking out of turn or running around their classroom, but it can be so much more than that. ADHD can be the daydreaming kid who forgets to turn their homework despite having finished it. The kid that can’t stop chatting to their friend in class. The kid that can’t seem to calm themself down when they feel angry.
Adolescents– All of the sudden you’re expected to handle all the things. You need to stay on top of your homework, manage your hygiene, and be more independent. Teens with ADHD may be slower to mature in some areas, leaving parents frustrated when they can’t seem to remember to brush their teeth or turn in their permission slip. With ADHD therapy we meet teens where they are and help them see where they can go.
Young Adults- Our brains are still developing into our early 20s. ADHDer brains are no exception. Young adults with ADHD might feel a sense of stuckness or be unsure of what they want to do. With ADHD therapy we guide them through this important transition and help them build the skills they need to take control of their lives.
Adults-Despite our hopes, ADHD doesn’t magically disappear at 30. Women, in particular, are often diagnosed later in life as the demands of work, family, and their social life become overwhelming and they feel like they’re “white knuckling” their way through life. Even adults that have been diagnosed and treated with ADHD earlier in life may find that the strategies they used aren’t working for them in this new phase of career or family.
Women-Of notable mention is our passion for working with women with ADHD. Why? Because women with ADHD are the most underdiagnosed population. Their ADHD symptoms are much sneakier since they tend to be less hyperactive and impulsive.
Women often experience inattention and have more internalized symptoms so their ADHD is not as obvious. Because of this, they’re often diagnosed later in life, and many times they are misdiagnosed with anxiety.
So, now what?
Good question! ADHD is not a death sentence. Life doesn’t have to feel this overwhelming. SESSION 1: This is a 90-minute, in-depth conversation about you, your relationships, your life, your ADHD symptoms, and your strengths!
SESSION 2: Using neurofeedback technology, we’ll create a map of your brain to get a better idea how your brain is performing. Though this is optional, it’s highly recommended. SESSION 3: This is where we put it all together! We’ll talk about what we learned from the previous 2 sessions. We’ll learn about how your brain works and let that inform treatment. We’ll create goals for treatment and a picture of the changes you’d like to see by the end of our time together.
SESSION 4: You’ll get practical strategies for tackling organization, planning, procrastination, and motivation and we’ll begin to process underlying feelings getting in the way of growth.
SESSION 5+: We’ll train your brain waves using neurofeedback technology (optional) while meeting your therapeutic and ADHD coaching goals. We’ll fine tune your treatment plan and build on your success!
OPTIONAL SESSION: Living your best life is often accomplished with the help of your support system. We offer couples and family sessions to teach your loved ones how they can help. PS-this is one of favorite sessions!

Even though there’s a lot of structure to our ADHD therapy program, we also recognize that no 2 brains are alike. And even if they were…no 2 lives (with stress, childhood, family and work) are exactly the same. For those reasons, we have MANY tools in our toolbox to help you accomplish your goals.

Neurofeedback– Neurofeedback therapy addresses what other therapies can’t. It allows us to read your brain waves in different parts of your brain. With this knowledge, we’re able to train to your brain to work better. This is especially important for people with ADHD that struggle to use their brain in the most efficient way.
Executive Function Coaching– This type of coaching helps you maximize your potential by creating processes designed to help you meet your goals.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)– CBT helps identify unhelpful thought patterns and develop a new way of looking at yourself. You’ll learn how to forgive yourself for mistakes, increase your self-confidence, and stop holding yourself back.
EMDR– Being a square peg in a round world can be emotionally difficult and can leave you feeling triggered. EMDR can help pinpoint deep negative beliefs and can help you to heal your unprocessed ickiness.
Marriage Counseling-When ADHD is unmanaged, it can take a toll on your relationship which can further deepen the shame. Couples therapy helps in the healing process by establishing reasonable expectations and coping strategies when things get hard. With this understanding, couples are able to grow their connection and remember the reasons why they fell in love in the first place.

Yes! ADHD is a real condition that affects an underreported (likely) average of almost 4.4% of all adults, and many as 6 million children in the United States.
The 3 main ADHD symptoms are hyperactivity, impulsive behaviors, and inattention. Some experts, like Russel Barkly, describe ADHD as an “executive function disorder” while others, like Dr. Edward Hallowell, describe it as the “Variable Attention Stimulus Disorder”. Experts are also researching a potential new diagnosis called maladaptive daydreaming that may fall under the ADHD umbrella.
While ADHD can be shown on MRI’s, it’s typically diagnosed through talking to a mental health professional about your symptoms, including during your childhood. Brain maps, using neurofeedback equipment, are also showing promising patterns that may be indicative of ADHD. There are also screening tools that may help give a clearer picture of your symptoms and their impact.
Executive functions are a set of cognitive skills that include self-awareness, inhibition, non-verbal working memory, verbal working memory, emotional self-regulation, self-motivation, planning, and problem solving (Dr. Russell Barkly). Those with ADHD might struggle with one or more executive functions, making things like cleaning the house, paying bills, remembering instructions or controlling anger more difficult.

There are many wonderful parts of ADHD, including a sense of humor, out of the box problem solving capabilities, creativity and often (though not always) boundless energy. ADHD by definition begins in childhood and persists throughout the lifespan. Sometimes those who were diagnosed as children will no longer meet criteria as adults due to developing skills to manage their ADHD symptoms.
