All The Ins + Outs
What is Ketamine Assisted Therapy?
Ketamine, a legitimate and safe medication, is an effective approach for treating various mental health conditions with its antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects often kicking in within just 1-2 hours after treatment and lasting for up to 2 weeks.
The magic of ketamine lies in how it works within our brains. By blocking NMDA receptors and stimulating AMPA receptors, it assists in forming new synaptic connections and boosting neural circuits responsible for stress and mood regulation.
In psychedelic assisted therapy, ketamine becomes a potent tool for mind transformation. Administered in controlled doses within a secure therapeutic environment, it facilitates deep psychedelic experiences. Unlike its typical anesthetic use, lower doses encourage an expanded consciousness, offering vivid imagery, shifted realities, and profound self-reflection – a therapeutic dive into the mind’s inner realms.
This approach has shown significant promise in addressing stubborn mental health challenges. Ketamine’s psychedelic effects have been known to rapidly alleviate symptoms, providing relief to those who haven’t responded to traditional treatments.

What happens During a Ketamine Session?
A ketamine session within a therapeutic context involves a structured process to harness the potential of this medication for healing and personal growth. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how a ketamine session typically works:
Getting started
REVIEW GOALS + INTENTIONS
You’ll arrive at our cozy office in comfortable clothes. We review your goals and intentions for the experience. You may choose to listen to soothing music or wear an eye mask to help facilitate inner healing.

Healing
RELAXATION
Once the ketamine takes effect, which typically occurs within minutes, you’ll likely experience changes in perception, a dissociative state, and an altered sense of time. During this time, you’ll be lying down in a comfortable, safe space.

Therapeutic
GUIDANCE
Throughout the session, your therapist will be present to offer guidance, reassurance, and emotional support. This support is essential in navigating any intense or unfamiliar feelings that may arise during the session.

Inner
EXPLORATION
The altered state induced by ketamine often allows for deep introspection, emotional release, and the potential for insights into your thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. Some people report experiencing vivid imagery, memories, or even a sense of connection to their inner selves.

Post-Experience
INTEGRATION
As the effects of ketamine subside, you’ll transition back to a more grounded state of mind. At this point, your therapist will help you process your experience, discussing any insights, emotions, or realizations you had during the session.

Frequently Asked Questions
You've got questions? We have answers!
Ketamine assisted therapy is a type of psychotherapy that involves the use of the medication ketamine to enhance the therapeutic process. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that has been shown to have rapid and potent antidepressant effects, making it an effective tool for treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.
Ketamine works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly glutamate, which is involved in regulating mood and cognition. By increasing glutamate levels, ketamine can help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Ketamine assisted therapy combines the medication with psychotherapy to provide a holistic and integrated treatment approach.
During a ketamine assisted therapy session, the client is takes a ketamine lozenge, which typically takes effect within minutes. The client then lies down in a comfortable and supportive environment, while the therapist provides guidance and support throughout the experience. The experience can be profound, with clients often reporting a range of emotional and psychological insights and breakthroughs.
Ketamine is generally safe when working with a trained and experienced healthcare provider. However, like any medication, ketamine does carry some risks, particularly when used improperly or in high doses. Common side effects include dissociation, nausea, and dizziness. Your healthcare provider will discuss the potential risks and benefits of ketamine with you before beginning treatment.
It’s important to discuss all medications and supplements you’re taking with your medical team. Some medications could interact with ketamine or impact the therapy’s effectiveness. Your medical provider will guide you on any necessary adjustments.
The number of sessions varies based on individual needs and treatment goals. Some individuals may see positive results after just a few sessions, while others might benefit from a more extended treatment plan. Your therapist will collaborate with you to determine the optimal approach.
In our KAP sessions, ketamine is administered sublingually, which means it’s placed under your tongue. You’ll hold the medication in your mouth and gently swish it around for approximately 12-14 minutes. Afterward, you’ll discreetly discard any remaining liquid. It’s important to note that we do not administer ketamine through intravenous (IV) methods, ensuring a comfortable and non-invasive experience during your sessions. This sublingual administration method is effective and allows for a controlled absorption of the medication.
KAP insurance coverage varies widely. While some carriers may offer partial coverage, others might not include it in their plans. It’s recommended to directly inquire with your insurance provider to obtain accurate and detailed information about potential coverage.
It’s important to note that Knot Counseling does not accept insurance so you’ll need to ask your provider about out-of-network provider benefits.
In our approach to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, we’ve teamed up with Journey Clinical, our preferred medical provider, to ensure a comprehensive and high-quality therapeutic experience.
Through a Zoom session, your experienced medical team with Journey Clinical delves into your medical history, introduces you to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), and assesses whether it’s suitable for you. If eligible, a personalized Ketamine prescription is crafted, and our medical staff prepares a precise amount of oral ketamine, discreetly delivered to your door for your first two KAP sessions. Your journey starts with understanding, care, and a clear path toward potential healing.
After a session, you might experience various emotions and insights. Your therapist will work with you to integrate these experiences into your daily life and provide tools for continued growth. Follow-up sessions are usually part of the treatment plan to support ongoing progress.
Marriage intensives need to be cancelled 7 days prior to the start of the intensive for a full refund. Because we have a wonderful clinician that has cancelled all of her other sessions to make room for your intensive, we’re sorry to report that cancellations within the 7 day period will charged the full amount.
Ketamine’s effects vary from person to person. The initial effects can last around 45 minutes to an hour, but the psychological and emotional insights gained from the session may last longer. Many individuals report continued improvements in mood and well-being over time.
The use of ketamine in ketamine assisted psychotherapy is distinct from recreational drug use. While ketamine is indeed a medication with psychoactive properties, its administration in a therapeutic setting is carefully structured, guided, and overseen by trained medical professionals. The focus is on utilizing ketamine’s potential for introspection, emotional processing, and healing, rather than seeking recreational or euphoric effects commonly associated with recreational drug use. The therapeutic context, medical guidance, and intention behind its use differentiate ketamine assisted psychotherapy from casual drug consumption.
